Game mechanics workshop with students collaborating on design

Game Mechanics Design Program

A comprehensive journey into crafting compelling game systems and mechanics that engage players and create memorable experiences.

Program Highlights

What makes our game mechanics program special? We've built it around three core pillars that'll transform the way you think about games.

Hands-on Learning

You won't just read about game mechanics—you'll build them. Each week, you'll prototype new mechanics and test them with peers, getting real feedback and iterations that stick.

I've seen students completely transform their understanding after just the first prototype session. There's nothing like seeing your own mechanics come to life!

Industry Mentorship

Learn directly from veterans who've shipped successful titles. Our mentors don't just teach theory—they share war stories and practical insights you can't find in textbooks.

Each student gets monthly 1-on-1 sessions with a mentor who's actually working in the style of games you're most passionate about.

Portfolio Projects

Graduate with 3-5 polished mechanics demos that showcase your unique design sensibilities to potential employers or publishing partners.

Unlike other programs that end with theoretical knowledge, you'll walk away with tangible proof of your skills—the kind that gets noticed by hiring managers.

Program Structure

Our 16-week curriculum breaks down complex game design concepts into manageable modules that build on each other. Start with fundamentals and graduate ready to innovate.

Module 1: Foundations of Game Mechanics

Weeks 1-4 cover the building blocks of game systems. You'll analyze classic mechanics from chess to Tetris, and begin crafting your own "mechanic vocabulary."

Core Loops Player Agency Feedback Systems

Module 2: Systems Design & Balance

Weeks 5-8 focus on creating interconnected systems that form compelling gameplay. You'll tackle the notorious challenge of balancing competitive mechanics and economies.

Economy Design Risk/Reward Progression Systems

Module 3: Player Psychology & Engagement

Weeks 9-12 dive into what makes mechanics "feel good." You'll study cognitive principles and apply them to create mechanics that players can't put down.

Flow State Satisfying Feedback Cognitive Load

Module 4: Innovation & Portfolio Development

Weeks 13-16 challenge you to break new ground. You'll refine your signature project and receive industry feedback before graduation.

"The program completely changed how I approach design problems. Before, I was focused on copying what worked elsewhere. Now I have a process for creating original mechanics that feel fresh but familiar. Within three months of graduating, I landed my dream job designing systems for mobile RPGs."

"As a solo developer, I was struggling to make my game stand out. The mentorship was worth every penny—my mentor helped me identify what was unique about my approach and lean into it. My latest game hit 50,000 downloads in its first month, and players specifically mention the satisfying mechanics in reviews."
